About This Story

Tonight's story is called The Otter and the Floating Lantern. When a stormy current sweeps little Ollie the sea otter away from his family's raft, he finds himself alone in the dark, drifting through unfamiliar waters. Frightened and unsure which way is home, he tries to paddle in every direction at once — until a soft, glowing lantern-shell appears on the waves, lighting only the very next stretch of water and no more. Ollie learns that he doesn't need to see the whole way home to be safe; he only needs to do his best with the part in front of him and place his trust in اللّٰه. By the end, Ollie is wrapped safely in his mother's arms again, having discovered that tawakkul — trusting Allah — turns even the darkest water into a peaceful path.

The Dua

Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but He. I have placed my trust in Him, and He is the Lord of the Majestic Throne.

— Surah At-Tawbah, 9:129
